Mission Overview

Mission Overview

Our research team conducted in-depth interviews with 8 smart home users to understand the gap between what the market offers and what people actually need.

Through contextual inquiries with participants ranging from tech-savvy software engineers to retirees struggling with touchscreens, we uncovered critical pain points that current smart home solutions fail to address.

This research directly informed our design of a unified smart home platform that prioritizes user control, privacy, and practical functionality.

What's the Issue?

What's the Issue?

What's the Issue?

Our interviews revealed three major problems with current smart home technology:

Device Fragmentation Creates Frustration: Users find juggling multiple apps for different device brands frustrating and desire unified control.

Privacy Concerns: Six out of eight participants expressed security worries, with concerns about unauthorized access, always-listening microphones, and data collection.

Setup Processes Fail Non-Technical Users: Device setup processes fail non-technical users, indicating design problems rather than user capability issues.

Automation vs. Control: Users need both automated routines and manual override capabilities for home control.

The Solution

Based on our research findings, we designed features that directly address the identified problems:

Universal Device Integration: We designed multiple connection methods - network scanning, manual search, and QR codes - to work with any device regardless of manufacturer.

Transparent Privacy Controls: Responding to widespread privacy concerns, we created detailed privacy settings that show exactly what data each device collects, allow time limits on data collection.

Simple Scene Management: Instead of complex automation setup that frustrated our participants, we designed intuitive scene creation. Users can activate multiple devices with one tap while maintaining individual device control.

This project demonstrates that successful smart home design requires understanding human behavior, not just technical capabilities. Our research revealed that users purchase smart devices for specific practical needs but discover joy in customization features through exploration.

Most importantly, we learned that user trust - built through transparency and control - is fundamental to smart home adoption. When users feel secure and in control of their technology, they engage more fully with available features.
